A clip-on microphone is a kind of microphone that is especially designed to be attached to the user. A clip-on microphone is called so, as it can easily be attached to the user’s clothes just with the help of a clip. While the clip-on microphone can be attached anywhere on the body, it is usually clipped to the lapel of a jacket, on necktie or in front of a shirt.

Clip on microphones function through wireless technology. The microphone is attached to a battery-powered transmitter through a cord. The transmitter then sends the signal emitted from microphone through VHF or UFH frequencies to a receiver, tuned to the same frequency as the microphone.

Clip-on microphones offer maximum portability and are very convenient. These microphones are perfectly suited for performers or singers who have a less conspicuous style and don’t move extensively around the stage when performing.

A very striking advantage of clip-on microphone is it doesn’t cause any damage to the instrument it’s attached to. This is because clip-on microphones have hand-made clamps, which ensure they don’t cause a damage to even of the most delicate instrument.

When using this microphone with a music instrument, users don’t require screws or holes to attach it to their instrument. To use a clip-on microphone, they simply need to clamp it to their music instrument.

The most prominent drawback of clip-on microphones is that the user cannot move the microphone away from the face as and when required.

The sound quality of clip-on microphone is low as compared to hand-held microphones.

The unique design of this microphone gives it more portability and makes it more convenient for the users.

Karaoke microphones enhance the voice quality significantly by producing even a mediocre voice sound more melodious. These microphones have proved very useful for musicians worldwide. A large number of sound recordists and other musicians have realized the advantage of karaoke microphones over regular ones. Due to this, the karaoke technology is being progressively used for recording songs.

Composers and singers have occupied schedules and frequently they face problem of remaining present at the same place (recording studio) at the same period to record songs. Nevertheless, because of to karaoke technology, singers and composers have the liberty to record the music by working independently from their respective locations without being together.

Karaoke microphones are either corded or cordless/wireless and come in several designs and costs. Based on their distinct features and capabilities, the cost of different Karaoke microphones varies.

Corded microphones can cost you about $25, whereas wireless karaoke microphones are comparatively moreexpensive and can cost you around $75. Some top quality karaoke microphones can even cost you around $300.

When purchasing a karaoke microphone, you should take into account important factors, such as its frequency response. It isrecommended that you choose buying a lightweight microphone having a range of 100-12,000 Hz.

Another essential characteristic you have to think about is the directionality of the microphone. Karaoke microphones are either unidirectional or omni-directional. A unidirectional microphone is best matched for Karaoke singing while the omni-directional microphone is perfect for choral groups and orchestras.

Buy a karaoke microphone containing ambient noise filters to shield unwanted background noise.

The KSM44SL is a multi-pattern (bi-directional, omni-directional and cardoid) dual large diaphragm condenser microphone developed to fulfill all the needs of studio recording musicians.
Feedback:

Although the KSM44 has a noticeable yet smooth peak in the 6 kHz region and another bump around 12 kHz, it sounded considerably less colored than the other mics. The low mids and bottom end are quite full and lush — very Neumann-like — and yet the top end was more open and natural sounding than the U 87s. In fact, compared with the other mics, the KSM44 exhibited the best overall balance of detail, presence, body, and thickness. It also proved the best mic for my voice, sounding clear and full and providing a nice forward nudge without excessive rasp or edge. – Sean Carbury

This is the best sounding microphone under $1000. You will not find a better mic for around $600. It is built like a tank, has superb frequency responses, is one of the quietest(7db self-noise) I have ever heard, and sounds just as good as those uber-expensive German mics. With the adjustability of patterns and pads, you can use it on anything. Voice, guitars, drums, up-close, overhead, whatever. The sound when matched to a quality tube preamp is amazing.

This mic has delivered everything it promised and more. I have a decent list of clients that are completely blown-away by this obscure powerhouse. Go ahead and read other reviews online. Everyone is impressed and extremely pleased with the Shure KSM44. I am getting a second one and will keep them forever as the first mics I grab out of the locker. - Rogue Scout Productions.

Benefits:

It comes with a 15-dB attenuation switch to effectively handle high input SPL sound sources. Its uniform polar response ensures natural, high quality off-axis response for critical recording.

It has a very low self-noise (7 dBA) to ensure smooth and high quality studio vocal recording.

Its full-range frequency response (20 Hz- 20 KHz) can ensure accurate sound reproduction of both voice and music instruments.

It contains a 3-position low-frequency filter, which controls proximity effect and virtually gets rid of the undesired background noise.

Facts:

The microphone is equipped with Class A transformerless preamplifier for transparency to facilitate ultra fast transient response and eliminate crossover distortion. It also helps in reducing intermodulation and harmonic distortions.

Its strong and durable die-cast housing and tough low-carbon steel grille can protect the cartridge in an event of accidental drop or misuse.

The uniform polar response gives natural off-axis response, which makes the microphone suitable for complex recording.

The microphone’s subsonic filter eliminates unwanted sounds that are below 17 Hz caused due to mechanical vibration.

Sennheiser has been a leading producer of condenser vocal microphones with its hugely successful evolution series. Its latest and most amazing offering is the Sennheiser e965- a large-diaphragm true condenser hand held microphone.
The Sennheiser e965 combines the ruggedness of a live hand held microphone with the sensitivity of the supreme quality world-class studio condenser. The confidence that the makers of Sennheiser e965 have in this microphone can be gauged from the fact that each microphone comes with an astounding 10-year warranty.
Purchase Recommendations

Feedback:

I have been performing live for almost 20 years now, and unless we had pro sound happening during a show, I struggled, like so many other singers, to cut across the band. Not to mention the impossibility of even using all the dynamics in my voice because the low volume/range stuff just would disappear. I was mostly using Shure SM58, the old horse, and knew how to work it well. But as my chops grew over the years and I started to be pickier, I tried several handhelds before finally coming across this one. And WOW. All I can say is, in comparison to the SM58, it’s like someone threw on the light switch while you never even knew you’d been in the dark. It has much more gain to start with, and does wonderful things to my voice across my (huge) range. Crystal clear lows, excellent highs, and just really, really comfortable to sing through. I would buy it again in a heart beat. -R. Pauck

Benefits:

The most striking feature of the Sennheiser e965 is it provides you with the onstage access to two different polar patterns, namely cardioid and supercardioid and that too, simply at the flip of a switch. It’s the first true-condenser, large diaphragm hand held microphone to come up with this innovative dual-diaphragm capsule design.

It boasts of the sensitivity of a studio condenser, which is a must when performing on stage.

Its 10 dB pad makes it a perfect choice for singers with a very strong voice.

It has a built-in moisture protection system that prevents the microphone from corrosion and provides the microphone great durability.

Every Sennheiser e965 microphone comes equipped with a handy storage pouch and an MZQ 800 mic clip.

Facts:

It has a low-cut switch for lowering rumble (irritating and continuous low noise).

It offers an amazing frequency response of 40Hz-20kHz

It has a stylish and sophisticated appearance complemented by a black body and dark-blue grille

Its capsule shock-mount efficiently eliminates undesired noise and ensures natural, clear sound

This is what users had to say about RODE NT4:

“The NT4 Stereo mic I use a lot for stereo horns over head, also for recording straight to DAT on a live performance, it works and sounds really good” – Bootsy Collins

“Here’s my vote for a realy great low-cost microphone…. The Rode NT-4. Frequently it is my FIRST CHOICE for acoustic Guitar and similar.” – Bruce Swedien?

Feedback:

I used a borrowed one. My goal was to use it because of aesthetics (it fit our act) and wound up being blown away by it’s replication of the vocals. It was perfect; clear and concise…When I go to doing some DAW work with live instruments and vocals, I’m going to grab this again! Wow! – Jim Landers

Without a doubt one of my favorite all around do everything WELL microphones. I’ve used these live on several tours on everything from Kick drum, snare drum, toms, bass guitars, electric guitars, overheads, leslie, saxophone, and vocals. For singer songwriters try two 4050’s both in figure 8 position. Use the first to help cancel vocals in the guitar mic using the null point (ask your sales person for further polar pattern info) and use the second to cancel guitars in the vocal mic. – Eddie Mapp

Benefits:

Audio Technica AT4050 can be used for live sound applications and for recording in studios. It has a very low noise floor that makes it suitable for both distance and close miking.

The state-of-the-art electronics and precision-built diaphragm provide it with low distortion and a brilliant transient response.

One of the most distinctive features of the AT4050 is, it’s available in three polar patterns.
Feedback:

“I used my ADK Custom TC12-Au on Lead Vocal on the album “Appeal to Reason” by Rise Against – Number One album on itunes for first three days of release!!! Thanks again for the new-improved capsule-technology!. -Jason Livermore – Producer/Engineer – Blasting Room Studios.

I used the ADK TC microphone to record vocals for one of my artists who I usually use a Neumann® U87 or a Telefunken® 251 on. It blew me away! I love the “proximity effect” of this microphone. The body of the sound, the presence in the midrange, the smooth top end… I couldn’t believe it! I tried this mic using my original Focusrite ASA110’s and my vintage Neve mic pre-amps, and you could really hear the actual qualities of the pre-amps. The mic translated great in each one, with each having it’s own character. To me this is the true test of an excellent microphone. I used a pair of the same mic as overheads on drums… unbelievable!!” -Bob Rosa, Grammy®-winning mixer/engineer (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Ednita Nazario, Paulina Rubio).

Benefits:

The ADK TC’s open-ended architecture makes it highly beneficial for soloists and modern vocalists. The ADK capsules make use of special humidity resistant processes and hand tensioning to ensure increased longevity and precision.

The most notable feature of this microphone is its amazing versatility. You can use it for both multi track recorder and computer station. The best part is it gives out natural, crystal clear sound.

Facts:

The unique selling point of the ADK TC microphone is it’s more classy and rich and can handle the plosives and sibilants much better than the microphones that have a large diaphragm. The main essence of the ADK TC is it has a robust transformer, classic Austrian Front, balanced tube design and of-the-mix tone. Besides, it has a Class-A Valve coupled with A Dual-triode design, which helps it warm up the unimaginative digital tracks.

Its low noise 6072A, coupled with nicely designed accessories and electronics, which makes it the best choice for Studio Professionals. The ADK TC microphone for critical live applications and HI-Def recording contains a 34 mm Gold Vapor –Deposit Capsule.

Feedback:
• “The new Shure KSM32 Studio Condenser Microphone may well become the standard workhorse of condenser mics. The KSM32 has a warm low end like a Neuman U87 with crisp highs like an AKG 414. The noise floor of the KSM32 was unbelievably low for a pahntom-powered microphone.”
- Roger Nichols
It weighs only about 490 gm and measures 187mm in length. Its widest part it is just 56mm in diameter. It offers a controlled and an accurate polar response.
